Assuming you have kept a command point in hand, you can attempt a cavalry react after to turn to face the cossacks after they have moved, and then charge them in your own following turn. As you noted you had an ideal counter available in the Spanish Guerilla unit. It could navigate the terrain, artillery drop a dice when boarding them, they are semi-expendable and good at skirmish fire- which is an Achilles heel for artillery.
Another good counter against artillery are large units. Difficult with an expensive Brit army I know.

Lastly, once the guns are deployed they are slow to redeploy. So a trick is to try and get your opponent to deploy his massed batteries, then go elsewhere. Which is what you did. Try to keep over 6" away from the guns and don't give them flank shots or squares to target.
All easier said than done against a good player, I know.

Oh, and rolling better the your opponent can help to.

Keep up the reports, hopefully I'll see you in Melbourne in July
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-84988155639400574.post-91188136575654013952022-03-18T03:01:01.664+11:002022-03-18T03:01:01.664+11:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.AlayaSEOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08786653889666434898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-84988155639400574.post-68353464843317206212021-08-25T14:53:28.724+10:002021-08-25T14:53:28.724+10:00Hah, yes. At some risk. And don't let the Cav start their charge within 2".

Basically, an Inf+gun can move to medium range (>2MU, <6MU) and has around 3 dice (+1 for the gun, -1 for Cav in the vicinity, maybe + another 1 for extra skirmish attachment so 4 dice) needing 2 hits fives to try and drop the cav a level. Get two units shooting at one, and its 6 dice. Sooner or later the Cav will need to charge or retreat, or the shooting will gradually get them wavering. 6 dice averages 2 hits per turn, so dropping them a level in each players turn and they can only rally one level in their own turn. Its slow, sometimes very slow, but inevitable.
When they charge, or a wavered so you can move to close, its 6 dice per unit shooting (4 base for volley fire, +2 for gun, no penalty for cav) hitting on 4s if charging and 5s if not.
Even 1 hit forces a test to charge home if charging, 2 drops a small unit a level and 3 means they can't even test to charge home as well as drop a level (of course, superior-charging or large Cav units will ignore one hit).

Forming square is safer, but having a gun and taking a risk gives you a decent chance of shooting them off. Even more so if you have a solid gunline and can get extra dice from support shots.

My 1812 US army specialises in that solid gunline - 6 infantry units with guns, most of them large. Even though they are low quality troops (lots of conscripts or poor drilled troops) they have slaughtered an elite French Heavy Cavalry Corps who tried to charge them frontally en-mass. I think 4 french shock units tried to charge, the US suffered a total of 1 disruption on the entire army and the French suffered two routs, two other wavers and a disruption or two (supporting units that didn't charge in the front line included).Corbonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05597538612991726840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-84988155639400574.post-25128630828433073702020-02-19T12:26:37.971+11:002020-02-19T12:26:37.971+11:00Well, thanks for writing them up. Especially wit that extra dash of style thrown in, like cashiering Cotton

I'm not so sure the list needs changing (through changing and trying different things is always a valuable pathway). That 3 unit Cav division is good enough to beat any enemy who hasn't invested significantly in Cav - at least 2 shock or three Cav total including 1+ heavies, without having over-invested yourself. That seems like about half the armies. It should have had at least parity if not superiority over what the French list allows - that French formation was not just illegal, but it was about the equivalent of two full French cavalry Corps! (The list notes for the Spring 1813 French Cav Corps say that a divisional formation is actually representing a full corps, and what was on your tabletop appears almost double sized, 22-24 bases instead of 12).
When the enemy has invested in more heavy cav, or much more cav, then its back to the original plan - support the infantry!

Incidentally, with the Lt Div coming on that flank, I'd probably have pushed forward too (but with every dice I could get on that FM, as per your mistake#3). Still limited to 12 bases and now can't get heavies and lts in the same division though.

Mistake 4 was not a mistake in truth.
All the combats happen 'simultaneously'. Although they may be diced for sequentially, the results are not applied until all have been rolled and the results are not applied combat by combat, but unit by unit in the order according to the Combat Resolution Table.
So first, all non-active (french in this case) broken units retire, and appropriate tests are made for those seeing it and those burst through by the routers. Then all active (british in this case) broken units retire, with appropriate tests etc, then all non-active waverers (some of which may have been in a better state before the broken troops did their thing!) do an outcome move, with tests etc as appropriate, then active waverers etc etc
Your heavies should still have had the Lts (broken, but still sitting there in combat at this stage - and thus nullifying potential side-support from their opponents) and Portugese beside and behind them at the time of their combat.
Corbonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05597538612991726840noreply@blogger.com
