1st wargame after Lockdown. A complete disaster. A long list of lessons to be learnt.

Field of Glory Napoleonic : British/Portuguese 1811 vs Moldova.

I lost nearly the entire British Light Division (every unit bar the Spanish Guerillas) and the entire British Calvary division. I disordered one of his units. For a turn. A complete and unmitigated disaster.

Lessons learnt (a lot of them :( )
Do Not Attempt A Frontal Attack In Spain.
Do Not Attempt A Frontal Attack Over Steep Hills.
British Light Rifle Infantry Cannot Assault Conscripts On Top Of a Hill If They Are Unsupported.
Charging Heavy Shock Cavalry THROUGH Moldivan Grenadiers won't actually disorder them (WTF).

Use the Spanish Guerillas as a support unit for the charging light infantry. Also they make very good unit in extended line in difficult or rough terrain where it is very hard to charge into them.

Light Infantry should be in extended line unless being charged.

Do Not Put Down Terrain Where I plan to attack.

Put Trees on cover I don't want someone to shoot through.

Put Trees on rough or Steep Hills to remind me not to try and walk over them or shoot OUT of them!

If choosing to defend, I need a artillery unit. This can force the enemy to attack my units.

If I AM defending with a smaller army, and the enemy is doing an envelopment, stand back and wait till they disclose their attack flank position.

If the enemy has the option to do an envelopment, a PROBE mission can help defeat it. Probe is also good to do if I have 4 divisions and not 3.

Take a road for terrain and place it where I want my LOC to be, behind my army. Portuguese Militia or Spanish Guerrillas can make a useful defense unit for them.

I need a cheap division to extend the line and allow the rest of the army to strike elsewhere.

Veteran troops do not need a command point to do 1 thing. Allocate command points to brigades that do not have veterans. Give divisions that don't have Veteran units a command point.

When charging the division, attach the division commander to the key point.

I need a skilled Corps commander to hand out 2 command points to one or two divisions.

I should station my Heavy Shock Cav in the middle of the line or behind a infantry unit. A complex test is needed to move through friendly infantry so they need a commander ATTACHED to them before declaring the charge to make it a +4 rather than +5. Veterans roll 3d6 instead of 2d6 for drilled so using KGL light cavalry can be a good way to do it if friendly infantry has spent the previous turn firing at the enemy infantry.

In Conclusion I feel right now I should just give up attempting to play wargames. Much like my army, my morale is shattered. I feel like the only army I should attempt to play would be an Allied one for the Gallipoli campaign...and it would end in the same result. Perhaps fight the same way the British did at New Orleans in the war of 1812.

Project Oathmark/Dragon Rampant- Episode 4C: A Look at the Books - Compa...

Justin Borges does a review comparison between Dragon Rampart and Oathmark.

I've read a lot more people play Dragon Rampart, which is older and more wide spread. He does good a comparison between the two.

My current planned Oathmark 2500 Army List

2500 Points

After weeks of playing around to fit everything I want in an army, beyond having some human cavalry and heavy cavalry.

It is made up of 3 "divisions", which from what I understand is historical for dark age and medieval armies.

The first division is the most powerful, with the army commander Princess leading the elite unit of linebreakers. Next to it is a unit of 3 OgresPolar Bear Cavalry. Attached is a unit of Elf Archers.

The 2nd division is a small infantry brigade of a spearmen unit, solider unit and elf archers.

The 3rd division (vanguard) is 2 small units of Goblin Wolf riders and 1 small unit of Goblin Wolf Rider Scouts.

A Dwarf Cannon, Human Wizard and Elf Ranger unit support the army. They will attack the most dangerous enemy unit or support the part of the army tasked with the most important of difficult task.

Each division has a Commander, Champion (or both for the Princess), an attacking unit, a blocking unit and an archer unit.

Started to put the Oathmark army together..and hit a roadblock

Here is the boxes for my planed 2500 point army. It lacks the Dwarf CatapultCannon and OgresPolar Bear Cavalry.

I will use them as: Elf Rangers, Elf Archers, Human Spearmen, Goblin Wolf riders and Wolf rider scouts, Human soldiers and Human Linebreakers.

The first units I plan on building are two units of 10 Elf Archers. Each infantry division in my army has one attached for fire support. Their low activation number, better than normal range (22" instead of 20"), aimed and fire over abilities make them the best archer unit in the game. They are also the most expensive archer units so can't be taken in large units.

Granted it's about 30% more or more than buying them but the HOURS of painting avoided! HOURS! I will want to run a wash over them and put them on bases, maybe need a flag or two, and that's it I hope. I've bought enough for the 7th Light Division so we'll see how they look.

An interview with Oathmark's designer

The Cast Dice Podcast, Episode 97 - Oathmark And Frostgrave II With Joseph McCullough

A sound-cloud interview with Joseph McCullough - designer of Oathmark and Frostgrave, Half about Oathmark and his designer's principles and half on Frostgrave II.

I like his thoughts about a Fantasy Battle System.  Small amount of dice to roll, limited unit size, no superhero characters able to wipe out entire units single-handed, multiple races in the same army and the ability to make your own army and kingdom with a campaign.

I do think the game needs some more magic items at different costs, and there is about 6 lines of fluff total in the book (it needs more), but the rules seem very solid.

It's not historical...but it is history in the making.

I am STILL waiting for the Oathmark rulebook...ordered as a pre-order. Never delivered. Replacement ALSO never delivered. I've ended up buying enough boxes for a 1000 point army I can't play due to the GLOBAL PANDEMIC and don't have the rules for or someone to play with either.

I have accomplished ONE thing during the lockdown.

I have accomplished ONE thing during the lockdown.

I couldn't be bothered doing the Long one. Chaos ended its life surrounded in the far north. Archon the everweak had been wounded a long time before hand.
