In Sharpe's Footsteps. . .Why Did The British Fight In Portugal and Spain

The first documentary on the Peninsula war in 20 years.  A new series on YouTube. It's not a talking head but actually going to show the locations of battlefields and places.

Australian Enginners and cheap terrain and tanks - Dark Castle Terrain

One of the main reasons I got into Bolt Action is finding a place at Slaves2Gaming that sold figures based on attack on Bardia, as I had a great uncle who was there in the 2/2 Field Park Engineers of the 6th Australian Division.

What they don't have is an "Engineer" unit.Well https://darkcastleterrain.com/ does!

Mid/Late war engineers, but they would work!

They don't work for 1941 Engineer's, but they represent what they are. Currently my only idea is to put a handcart full of equipment next to the unit.I'd really like some men with shovels, wire cutters and Bangalore torpedo's, but I haven't found anyone like that yet. If I add some riflemen to it and drop the mine detectors I can do a squad easily enough.

Video including some of the 2/2nd Field Park Company is here and some war diary's here.

They also do resin desert adobe buildings, and their resin  and MDF tanks, terrain and building are cheaper than I can find anywhere else. You have to wait 10 days for it to be made, but I would not mind the wait.

I will need to get some!

Best painted armies I saw at Small Unit Tactics IV

I asked but didn't catch who actually won the best painted army at Small Unit Tactics IV, but here's the ones I liked:

Germans in the mud of Stalingrad

I appreciated spending the time to make the background. All the...mud and grey and grim dark grimnes in the grim dark Stalingrad gets a bit...boring, but it looks like he spent a lot of time on the bases, which I liked.

Polish Cavalry,  tankettes and a bear

I wanted to see this army when I was told about it, and there we have it. I asked later and the cavalry did NOT do much of anything, which I am bitterly disappointed at. I wanted to hear they charged enemy tanks (well, armored cars).  One day I would like to make a Polish army and make it a cavalry army.

I also liked the clear plastic bases, which would make a lot of sense and not depend on where you're fighting to look good.

Note the bear. They have a bear.  I don't know what unit the bear represents, but I hope it got some kills and survived every battle

DAK 90th Light Division with Brandenburgers

But this was my favorite. He spent the time to have an actual back story written up, including a unit of fake British traffic controllers and MP's,

It also looks like a great army for my army to have fought against, so I'm sad I didn't get a chance to do so.

The painter Tim commented on Facebook:

Scrolling through FB and hey, that's my army! Was super chuffed to win best painted 🙂 It was a great day of BA, and I'm glad you enjoyed it too. I've found the BA community in Melbourne to be super welcoming. Looking forward to seeing you around - maybe get in that Aussies vs DAK match-up!

This sounds like an amazing army to build and would make a hilarious WW2 movie

Specifically, Leutnant von Leipzig was ordered to take a Brandenburg commando team and begin a reconnaissance effort of today's Niger and Chad to determine if German efforts could indeed be channeled to disrupting this supply line. Lake Chad and its surrounding areas were selected as being the most effective zones of disruption. About 100 Brandenburger troops were made available for "Dora". They were equipped with 24 British military vehicles, 12 40mm armed trucks, 4 British Jeeps with AA MG's, a command sedan, a signals truck, a gasoline and a water supply truck and a small mobile mechanical service truck. All participants had a solid command of either English or French, three also spoke fluent Arabic.

The team departed Tripolis in either June or July of 1942. The convoy drove via Hun and Sabbah bound for Marzuq (an Italian garrison in south eastern Libya). A "Feldflugplatz" was constructed about 35 miles from the town of Al-Qatrun (south of Marzuq). The idea was to deploy a number of refurbished Spitfires there (they were to be flown by Brandenburger pilots). Al-Qatrun was to serve as the primary base of operations. In July of 1942, von Leipzig divided his 100 man team into three smaller teams. He took charge of the first group.

The first group proceeded to advance towards the Tassili plateau in south-eastern Algeria. From there, the Brandenburger's proceeded to build another forward staging base. No sooner had they reached the Tassili mountain region, they were discovered by a French armored unit which immediately opened up fire. Over the course of the next few days, the Germans worked hard to stay one step ahead of the French. The French then proceeded to set up a trap for the Brandenburgers in a small Arab village located about 35 miles from the town of Ghezehida (Algeria).

The British and the French reacted in total panic - they had not expected to see German troops in that part of Africa. Additional French troops, British Colonial troops, special commando units, etc., were now ordered to converge on the Brandenburgers. To better effect their escape, the Brandenburgers now switched over to wearing French uniforms; having buried their German uniforms deep in the sand. The Brandenburgers did something cool and calculated - they drove right up to a French unit and told them that they were one of the many parties sent to the region to catch the dreaded German infiltrators. Because of their French language skills, the ruse worked. The local French commander gave them food and supplies. But then disaster struck. A French commander gave one of the Brandenburgers an order - to the only Brandenburg team member who spoke no French. Von Leipzig quickly took advantage of the confusion, ordered his men to their trucks and escaped with all his men - now bound for the Libyan border again. The French were so dumfounded that they waited until a more senior French military officer had arrived to help make sense of what just happened. Of this team, only four were killed in action (in a firefight with French forces on a mountain top).

The second group under the command of Feldwebel Stegmann proceeded to advance over the Tibesti mountain range in northern Chad and from there proceed towards Lake Chad. Their assignment was to operate in French Equatorial Africa and cause as much havoc as possible. Two days after departing, the team was "attacked" by Bedouins. Feldwebel Stegmann however maintained his composure and ordered every Brandenburger to remain perfectly still. It turned out that the "attack" was a Bedouin test of courage and allegiance. The Tibbu Bedouins also hated the French and they were very willing to help the Germans. With help, the Germans were able to infiltrate the ancient caravan town of Bardai. It was held by only a company sized unit of French troops. It did not take the Germans long to ascertain the fact that a strong contingent of French troops were on their way. A decision was thus made to return to Libya. 14 days later, all German Brandenburgers arrived safely in Marzuq.

The third group under the command of Leutnant Becker was to advance towards the Libyan town of Ghat (south-western Libya) and penetrate southern Algeria. They were to avoid combat situations if possible. After crossing the border town of Ghat, they ran into a village occupied by French forces. Through a series of clever subterfuges, the Brandenburgers were able to create a condition of medical quarantines in the region. This worked, and no additional French forces dared to enter a quarantine area. The local Arab people were willing participants to this ruse, as it made the hated French look as foolish as possible. The third group too returned unharmed to German lines in Libya.

After being recalled from Marzuq due to the British attack at El-Alamein, the Brandenburg commando's reported back that it would take at least a few divisions worth of men to successfully complete the designed mission. On the day that the Brandenburger's were recalled to Tripoli, the promised Spitfire a/c arrived. A few reconnaissance missions were flown, the resulting reports were however not encouraging. But it was too late, "Dora" was then canceled.

This sounds like a Comedy that deserves to make into a movie in the 1970's.

Finished painting 2 Matilda II's - my first Bolt Action minatures

It's taken several days but I've finished my first Bolt Action units - two Matilda II tanks. Painted as late 1941/42 desert. Technically they should be in Caunter Camouflage but that's way too hard for me.

Every paint and shade below the line for my future reference. I used the Vallejo undercoat spray can because no one seems to sell the Army Painter undercoat, and this was a better colour I think. I used mostly Army Painter Speedpaintd 2.0 for the base layer and Citadel dry's for drybrushing (because I have had them for years before, and no one else seems to sell dry paints). Finished in the Vallejo Matt Varnish.

Weapon and commander coding colours for Bolt Action infantry stands

I saw a Bolt Action tutorial series on YouTube (that I now cannot find because there are SO MANY now that I've watched) that had painted the edge of the infantry bases different colours for each type of solider- Squad leader, squad heavy weapon, basic grunt.

I think this is an amazing idea considering all the infantry is painted very much the same and deliberately so.

There does not seem to be any historical or current practice of a colour for each type of unit that I can find. I'm thinking of a different one for Platoon Commander, Squad commander, SMG, LMG, Light Mortar, Sniper, Anti-Tank weapon, because these are the hardest to tell apart. Larger weapons are are a lot easier to see and tell apart.

I don't think I'd want to paint the entire edge like the video did, but just a stripe or stripes of multiple colours on the back edge of the base plate as I'm the one who will care about it the most. The rest of the plate should match the terrain the army is based on (green for Europe, dark green for Pacific, pale yellow/brown for Africa, and white for the Eastern Front)

I know British Armour for example would have different colours for platoons or companies, but this is just for infantry.

Using video game rarity, which is the style these days for everything:

White: The most common rarity color

Grey: A low value color

Green: A middling value color

Blue: A middling value color

Purple: A high value color

Legendary rarity colors

Orange: The highest value color

Colour Coding stripes on the back of each infantry's base:

Base Colour: Rifle

Grey: SMG

Grey and White: Assault Rifle

Grey and Blue: Automatic Rifle

Blue: LMG

Purple: Mortar

Purple and White: Grenade Launcher

Light Green: Anti-Tank

Brown: Sniper

Red: Flamethrower

Orange: Artillery Spotter

Yellow: Air Spotter

Red and White: Medic

Black: Assistant

Weapon Colour and Black: Weapon team assistant

Bronze: Squad Commander

Silver: Platoon Commander

Gold: Company Commander

Looks like I'll need to buy some Army Painter Speedpaint Metallic's now, along with purple, blue, light green, red and yellow.

Future plans for Bolt Action - The 2nd battle of El Alamein.

I haven't even started my first army but I know what I want to do for my 2nd. A mid-war Commonwealth army of the 2nd battle of El Alamein.

What draws me to it is I can use some of my 1st Bolt Action army, and it's a combined army of nearly every Commonwealth nation. Australia, New Zealand, Indian, Scottish, British, Polish, Free French, American Armour (including Sherman's(!), Crusaders, Grants and Matilda's) and others. I feel like I would need 1 platoon of each for a full multi-national army. Not very historical, but it would work as a theme.

This is the best TV documentary I've found of it - made 50 years afterwards and on location. Gives a great demonstration of the actual terrain of the battle. There is video of the actual buildings like Rommel's headquarters I can copy and build, the trees, ground and villages.

The pieces to camera of the soldiers is a bit naff but I hope/assume they are actual writings from the battle. It could have used some Axis accounts but it goes through a lot.

I give it a 4 out of 5 starts.  5/5 for a TV doco, but You Tubers can do it better, but can't go on the actual location!

Video of a US reinforced platoon attacking a town in a training exercise

Video of a US reinforced platoon attacking a town in a training exercise

I finally found it: a video showing a reinforced platoon conducting an attack. 3 squads (of 5 engineers as they have satchel chargers), 3 5 man rifle squads (cover party for each assault squad with a light machine gun, a mediam mortar squad (with spotter), MMG squad, Bazooka squad, 2 tanks in reserve. Command by a platoon commander (by himself).

Turn by Turn Description:

Initial bombardment of the objective and then smoke (!) rounds before the infantry go in, Note: Smoke rounds seem to suck in Bolt Action.

1st squad in wedge formation, rest in column. Medium mortar deploys behind them.

Lead squad in the centre, one other squad on each flank.

Recoilless rifle between 2 of the squads, bazooka next to the right and the LMGs between them.

Smoke stops firing before the infantry goes in as all infantry units opens fire on the defenders in the buildings.

Medium mortar using a spotter does counter battery fire on enemy mortar.

Left squad runs into the first objective building (doing an advance and then a run), rest of the infantry shoot at other targets, they assault and take it.

LMG squad gets pinned so mortar fires smoke(!) to cover them.

Left squad shoots at one building and the LMG team shoot at 2nd from upstairs,

They switch to a new building as the other squad assaults the 2nd building,  again doing an advance and then a run.

Platoon CO gets into the first building and goes to its roof.

One squad uses a Engineer demo charge(!) to enter another building.

Bazooka shoots at t the next building and left squads assaults it (with a grappling hook to the 2nd level!).

Bazooka fires smoke(!) and the LMG team come up to support the squad with the Bazooka.

Last squad and RR comes into town.

Squad attacks the next building from the roof and work their way down. LMG team covered the door.

Tanks come in from reserve and shoots the next building, Squad goes in and assaults the basement with an engineers charge.,

One injury gets a medic.

Last building surrenders when their army reaches it's break point.

Company commander gets 2nd platoon through to the next target.

Note: The enemy seems to consist of about six, 5 man squads of infantry with LMG's and 1 mediam mortar.

Conclusion:

To win in a buildup area, use Surprise, firepower, good troops. Do an artillery barrage first, then a smoke barrage. Use engineers to assault buildings, rifle squads to cover them with LMG's. MMG and Bazooka to cover flanks and shoot into buildings. Mortar in the rear for support and tanks in reserve to come up later. Medic at the back for support.

The Army list:

It works out with early war Sherman's to be 1100. Have to get some extra platoon commanders but making the heavy weapons commander inexperienced makes it work! I do have to drop the Recoilless Rifle though and not replace it with another bazooka.

Actual Platoon ToE and WW2 training videos

It annoys me that I can't make a platoon with sections because the special weapons like ATRs and Mortar's go off on their own team, though I can see why they do it for the game. But I should be able to split the LMG off with 2 other men, and have a smaller section of 4! And a full section is 8 not 10.

British WW2 Training films from AWM

I presume the 1941 Australian Infantry Platoon was setup the same way. Google is fucking useless at finding it though.  I suspect they lack the bicycle in the desert.

Universal Carrier handling and what they carry and act.

Bren Gun use. Interesting it has a tripod for ground use that NO ONE EVER MENTIONS. Only German GPMG's ever get that talked about! Granted it's not belt fed but you probably get as much rounds with quick magazine charges.

British and German tank identification, but includes information about their practice.

Using the 3-inch mortar. Interesting it has  6 man crew, not 3 as in the game, though 2 of them act as a spotters.  The smoke screen would cross the entire table, which I guess is is why it's nerfed in V3.

100 years of British Army organization

Movies of the actual Battle of Bardia for reference and painting

With all this theroycrafting I should watch the existing film of the ACTUAL battle and its aftermath.

A long setup to the battle with the troops getting to the middle east. A ships cat. Weirdly it shows Crusader I's I think, but refers to the Matilda's. Maybe from later on in the war? The camo on them is post early 41. Also has some German troops from much later!  Looks Vickers light tanks with the .50 cals on training beforehand. All painted sand colour (or covered in it). Dark colored Bren Gun Carries but caked in sand to the half way point. Has a light colored field ambulance. Captured Italian tanks attacking Tobruk. Mention of the 2/1 Field Park Engineers and 2/3rd  Battalion wearing light colored clothes in shorts and short sleeves and cloth covered helmets I suspect are training. Everyone else is in the dark Khaki.  A Cruiser tank of some sort WITH Bren gun pintle mount!

Content warning: Dead bodies past the 16:30 mark.

Raw footage that shows up a lot in other videos. Shows troops in dark Khaki tops but most are wearing light shorts, post battle when going on patrol(?). Guards are wearing greatcoats, it must have been very cold. Terrain is filmed from the and consists of buildings, compounds, sand and dirt dunes and lots of abandoned trucks. Whitewashed Libyan buildings for the centre of town. Trucks have camonets over them. The desert has lots of bunkers, sangers, emplacements, walls and ground floor ruins. Lots of flat space with sparse rocks.

Content warning: Dead bodies past the 6:15 mark.

Mostly terrain, destroying buildings and trucks moving about. The staff cars often have a camonet on them.

Looks like the Matilda II's have Cuanter Camouflage, which is going to be very hard for me to paint. I suspect I'll just cover it in sand colour, which they ended up being anyway. I should put a pennant on the command tank.

Content warning: Dead Italian artillerymen who fell a their guns around 2:40 mark

The 18 pounder crews are wearing slouch hats! More Cuanter Camouflage for Bren Gun Carriers, but at least one looks to be painted a dark green. Only one of the many carriers seen has a pintle mounter Bren gun, so it did happen, but wasn't common.

25 pounders and this time the crews wear helmets and great coat, which makes me think the earlier ones were after the battle. Looks like a Rolls Royce Armored car with Boys AT rifle and Bren gun in an open top. So I COULD get one. One of the trucks has a pintle mounted(?) Bren gun behind the cabin. Troops are wearing dark Khaki clothes and great coats., Helmets are light (presumably sand colored).  Telegraph poles, small single trees in the town. Also a Vickers light tank with .50cal crossing a tank trap after the battle.

Mostly post battle. Lots of rocks and sangers in the terrain, 4.5" howitzers, though they would not have been on the table! The guns have camo on them, and nets. 18 or 25 pounders and the crews are all wearing dark Khaki.

Content warning: Dead Italian infantry who fell at their posts at 1:30 mark. Sad part is seeing the family photos from one of them.

Yet another change - CanCon rules are no more than 18 order dice

...And there's another rule I need to take into account. Cancon runs their Bolt Action tournaments and narratives (which sound awesome to play) with a max of 18 order dice. Meaning my 19 order dice army list will not work!

The easiest way to do it is to remove the 2nd light mortar.  Or the stretcher bearers. And I like the stretcher bearers.

So back to no platoon runners. The truck DOES get upgraded to a 3-ton truck which means I can move a full squad AND the platoon commander forward from the engineer platoon. But it's now inexperienced but the commander would be in it to get it on the table if needed.

The AT Rifle team and Light Mortar are still inexperienced but the Matty II is now regular. I'd rather have the tank on the field than the AT rifle and mortar that can't lay smoke :(

The AT team can also stay in the carrier and man the pintle mounted Bren LMG.

And just to complicate things, every Bolt Action Tournament in Australia has different points values between 1000, 1100 or 1250! So who knows what size the army would actually need to be! If I have to drop to 1000 I'd probably drop the sniper, stretcher bearers and the light mortar squad.  If it's 1250 I might get a second Matilda II and use them as a pair at all times.

Trying to find the ToE for Bardia

So I've been trying to find the actual unit Table of Equipment for the Australian 6th Division in Early 1941 and Google is absolutely fucking useless.

However, I do have the unit records from the 2/2 Field Park company and one of the records DOES show what they had in March 1941, around the attack on Tobruk.

Binoculars , compasses, something something. Pity the guy doing the scanning did it out of focus.

Rifles

Pistols

Bren Guns

Bren gun AA mounting

Boys AT rifles

Bayonets

Scabbards

Vans -  15-CWT, 1-Ton, 30-cwt, 5-ton

I will have to claim the SMG's are captured Italian ones. All of which were supposed to be given back before the troops arrived at Tobruk for reinforcements to use. I'll need to find the ToE of the Rifle companies!
