Best painted armies I saw at Small Unit Tactics IV

I asked but didn't catch who actually won the best painted army at Small Unit Tactics IV, but here's the ones I liked:

Germans in the mud of Stalingrad

I appreciated spending the time to make the background. All the...mud and grey and grim dark grimnes in the grim dark Stalingrad gets a bit...boring, but it looks like he spent a lot of time on the bases, which I liked.

Polish Cavalry,  tankettes and a bear

I wanted to see this army when I was told about it, and there we have it. I asked later and the cavalry did NOT do much of anything, which I am bitterly disappointed at. I wanted to hear they charged enemy tanks (well, armored cars).  One day I would like to make a Polish army and make it a cavalry army.

I also liked the clear plastic bases, which would make a lot of sense and not depend on where you're fighting to look good.

Note the bear. They have a bear.  I don't know what unit the bear represents, but I hope it got some kills and survived every battle

DAK 90th Light Division with Brandenburgers

But this was my favorite. He spent the time to have an actual back story written up, including a unit of fake British traffic controllers and MP's,

It also looks like a great army for my army to have fought against, so I'm sad I didn't get a chance to do so.

The painter Tim commented on Facebook:

Scrolling through FB and hey, that's my army! Was super chuffed to win best painted 🙂 It was a great day of BA, and I'm glad you enjoyed it too. I've found the BA community in Melbourne to be super welcoming. Looking forward to seeing you around - maybe get in that Aussies vs DAK match-up!

This sounds like an amazing army to build and would make a hilarious WW2 movie

Specifically, Leutnant von Leipzig was ordered to take a Brandenburg commando team and begin a reconnaissance effort of today's Niger and Chad to determine if German efforts could indeed be channeled to disrupting this supply line. Lake Chad and its surrounding areas were selected as being the most effective zones of disruption. About 100 Brandenburger troops were made available for "Dora". They were equipped with 24 British military vehicles, 12 40mm armed trucks, 4 British Jeeps with AA MG's, a command sedan, a signals truck, a gasoline and a water supply truck and a small mobile mechanical service truck. All participants had a solid command of either English or French, three also spoke fluent Arabic.

The team departed Tripolis in either June or July of 1942. The convoy drove via Hun and Sabbah bound for Marzuq (an Italian garrison in south eastern Libya). A "Feldflugplatz" was constructed about 35 miles from the town of Al-Qatrun (south of Marzuq). The idea was to deploy a number of refurbished Spitfires there (they were to be flown by Brandenburger pilots). Al-Qatrun was to serve as the primary base of operations. In July of 1942, von Leipzig divided his 100 man team into three smaller teams. He took charge of the first group.

The first group proceeded to advance towards the Tassili plateau in south-eastern Algeria. From there, the Brandenburger's proceeded to build another forward staging base. No sooner had they reached the Tassili mountain region, they were discovered by a French armored unit which immediately opened up fire. Over the course of the next few days, the Germans worked hard to stay one step ahead of the French. The French then proceeded to set up a trap for the Brandenburgers in a small Arab village located about 35 miles from the town of Ghezehida (Algeria).

The British and the French reacted in total panic - they had not expected to see German troops in that part of Africa. Additional French troops, British Colonial troops, special commando units, etc., were now ordered to converge on the Brandenburgers. To better effect their escape, the Brandenburgers now switched over to wearing French uniforms; having buried their German uniforms deep in the sand. The Brandenburgers did something cool and calculated - they drove right up to a French unit and told them that they were one of the many parties sent to the region to catch the dreaded German infiltrators. Because of their French language skills, the ruse worked. The local French commander gave them food and supplies. But then disaster struck. A French commander gave one of the Brandenburgers an order - to the only Brandenburg team member who spoke no French. Von Leipzig quickly took advantage of the confusion, ordered his men to their trucks and escaped with all his men - now bound for the Libyan border again. The French were so dumfounded that they waited until a more senior French military officer had arrived to help make sense of what just happened. Of this team, only four were killed in action (in a firefight with French forces on a mountain top).

The second group under the command of Feldwebel Stegmann proceeded to advance over the Tibesti mountain range in northern Chad and from there proceed towards Lake Chad. Their assignment was to operate in French Equatorial Africa and cause as much havoc as possible. Two days after departing, the team was "attacked" by Bedouins. Feldwebel Stegmann however maintained his composure and ordered every Brandenburger to remain perfectly still. It turned out that the "attack" was a Bedouin test of courage and allegiance. The Tibbu Bedouins also hated the French and they were very willing to help the Germans. With help, the Germans were able to infiltrate the ancient caravan town of Bardai. It was held by only a company sized unit of French troops. It did not take the Germans long to ascertain the fact that a strong contingent of French troops were on their way. A decision was thus made to return to Libya. 14 days later, all German Brandenburgers arrived safely in Marzuq.

The third group under the command of Leutnant Becker was to advance towards the Libyan town of Ghat (south-western Libya) and penetrate southern Algeria. They were to avoid combat situations if possible. After crossing the border town of Ghat, they ran into a village occupied by French forces. Through a series of clever subterfuges, the Brandenburgers were able to create a condition of medical quarantines in the region. This worked, and no additional French forces dared to enter a quarantine area. The local Arab people were willing participants to this ruse, as it made the hated French look as foolish as possible. The third group too returned unharmed to German lines in Libya.

After being recalled from Marzuq due to the British attack at El-Alamein, the Brandenburg commando's reported back that it would take at least a few divisions worth of men to successfully complete the designed mission. On the day that the Brandenburger's were recalled to Tripoli, the promised Spitfire a/c arrived. A few reconnaissance missions were flown, the resulting reports were however not encouraging. But it was too late, "Dora" was then canceled.

This sounds like a Comedy that deserves to make into a movie in the 1970's.

Bolt Action Australian 6th Division 1941 January painted

All painted, I see so many flaws but I'm done. Just need to base them tomorrow, add unit type colour stripes on the back and spray Matt varnish for a game on Sunday at League of Ancients. I can't do my 1100 point army because I have not put 3 plastic Bren Gun Carriers together, so I'm going for a more elite veteran force.

My painting guide is here.

The Bayonets are all bent or doomed to break off If I ever do another army, no Bayonets!

The Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0 are SO much faster than my old Citadel paints and nicer to use in drop bottles. I just wish there was a brown that was WW2 British Uniform Khaki. They shade and highlight very well, though the lighter paints are so transparent they won't go over darker ones. You need to be careful leaving space for the very light colours. Though having Western Europe Khaki and light Desert colored helmets and packs was always going to make it hard. The Army Painter Shaders arn't quite like the Washers they have now, but I very much like them.

I avoided mixing paints as I will need to add to this force in the future.

I probably didn't need to have different colours for the Puttee's and Boots as they are so close to be identical.

There's very little different between the Pale Bone backpack and Howling Sand gas mask bag, I don't think I'll bother using the Howling Sand next time.

The Great Coat is too dark, it looks like it's made of leather instead of wool. Nuts.

Some of them have crusader skin instead of tanned skin but that was a tad too dark.

The Pale Bone is so transparent it won't show up over the very dark great coat unfortunately, and my painting skills are not good enough to leave them unpainted when doing the coat.

With the very dark overcoat I don't think I actually got any point to spending the time to do a Zenithal highlighting :(

The great coat and pants were the most time consuming and unfun part of it. I switched to a Army Painter Monster brush from a Regiment brush afterwards and this made everything else much faster.

Doing the washes and slapping them over the paint was the best and most enjoyable part

I didn't do any drybrushing on the infantry as I don't think they need it.

First Speedpaint layer on 40 Australian early 1941 infantry

I have 40 Australian Infantry from Slave 2 Gaming's Bardia set. Metal miniatures with rifles, bayonets and platoon support weapons. I have also have 3 Warlords Games British Officers to do. The last 10 are all in shirts and shorts so will be done later (or are objective carts).

I started with an undercoat of Vallejo English Uniform spray can and then I'm trying for the first time a Zenithal highlight with Vallejo Bonewhite spray can. I want them to be lighter when I look at them, and as that will be their backs to me on the battlefield as they advance out of the darkness of the dawn with the sun at their backs (if advancing west to east, which they did NOT do at Bardia, but did do after Tobruk), I did it from a 45 degree angle behind them, rather than on the traditional 90 angle from the top, because none of my paint jobs are good enough up close. Best I can do is looking at them from 6 feet away on a tabletop.

After spray painting the 50 infantry from all angles, the Vallejo English Uniform spray can is almost empty.

I used an Army Painter Regiment brush. I'm not good at this and I'm splitting it already :(. I DO very much like the fact it's a triangle so you can put it down without rolling away like Citadel brushes do! I won't be buying the Citadel ones and unless I have no choice. Flat based ones are so much better to use.

I did use a Citadel Wash cup which has got some ribbing on it and slots to try and sharpen the brush and a Citadel Figure holder to actually hold the figure in place. Trying to do it with just my hand was a lot harder. These are indispensable. Also used is a Citadel paper palette as I have read that Speedpaints and a wet palette do not work well, the Speedpaint is wet enough as is.

I choose to the battledress uniform and great coat in Army Painter Speedpaint 2.0 Warrior skin....but looking at there results maybe should have chosen Ruddy Fur. I didn't do the ruddy fur as it's listed as being a bit red more than brown. The paint went on VERY smoothly. I never want to go back to normal acrylic paints again. Citadel Layer paints take FOREVER compared to these speedy paints that go on once and you're done. Also, I don't need to thin my paints or use a wet palette! A huge time saver!

From the back/top it's very light brown, but from the front where the highlight didn't go, it's a lot more dark. I think it will look better once I put a dark wash over the backlight areas. I shall have to try a mid-brown wash and then a strong wash to see the impact.

Adding a wash to desert Matilida II's

I added a wash of Army Painter 50% Light tone and 50% Quickshade Wash Mixing Medium. I'm not really sure I needed to use the wash medium. It's supposed to make the wash more transparent, which I suppose is what I wanted as these are supposed to be dust covered tanks.

All done

I've also reorganized my painting setup now I have enough Speedpaints 2.0 to start:

Top level : Citadel Dry paints

2nd level: More Citadel Dry paints, Citadel Gold layers. Citadel medium. Citadel Texture paint. Army Painter Matt Varnish

3rd level : Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0

4th level: More Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0. Army Painter Speedpaint 2.0 medium. Army Painter Speedpaint 1.0

5th level: Army Painter Quickshade washers and mediam

6th level: Army Painter Warpaints

Bottom level: More Army Painter Warpaints. Superglue, Superglue faster spray, Plastic Glue. Citadel Orange ink. Citadel brown washer and brush cleaner.

Undercoat and base coat of Matilida II's in the desert

I got all but one Army Painter SpeedPaint 2.0 from https://khaki-green.com.au/ so I can start painting! Yay! One bottle was not in stock but it's being sent the same day everything else arrived. I'll need to use the 10% discount it came with next time to get some more colours to replace the old warpaints and speredpaint 1.0 I have.

Undercoat (called Primer these days for some reason):

Undercoated Vallejo Bonewhite Spray Can

I started with an undercoat of Vallejo Bonewhite. I found it very easy to spray and put on, though it was a bit windy. It looked a bit thick when drying initially but came out fine.

Base coat:

I spent some time looking at Google Earth to see the colour of the sane around Bardia. Turns out it's either red or yellow depending on when the photo was taken.

Left tank is the wing-man tank, right tank the command tank, currently not painted beyond undercoat

The left one is painted in one coat of Army Painter Speedpaint 2.0 Pallid Bone. I found the paint very thin, practically a wash, but that worked out fine for what I was using it for.  It might not work for me when doing the infantry. Technically the tank's supposed to be painted in Caunter Scheme but that's WAY too advance for me, and by the time the tanks were in action with dust and sand it was covered up anyway and barley visible. By the middle of '41 they gave up trying to paint the dazzle camouflage and just went all sand anyway.

Turret painted on the right, unpainted on the left

I broke off one of the headlights from the command tank, and getting back on was very very hard. I dropped it once, and found one of the missing headlights for the other tank! So at least that has one headlight, even if's unpainted lead I tried to cover with the Pallid Bone.

The one on the left looks a bit darker, I did that one first and I'm not sure why. Maybe I needed to mix the bottle again more before doing the second one.

Next up: Paint details like the shovel, blankets, grenade launchers , lights front and back, exhaust and treads.

Assembled my first Bolt Action infantry, and undercoated

I got most of these infantry years ago but Bolt Action V3 has got me to put them together.

Most of the infantry is all from https://www.slave2gaming.com/ from their 28mm Australians at Bardia range. I seem to be missing one of the squad commanders with SMG but that's OK. I should buy 2 more Vickers MMG's and 2 Stokes mortars.

After playing around with my list for the 99th time I have all the infantry figures I need, and some left over. I still need to put together 2 Warlord Games resin Australia Matilda II's. The actual battle had English ones but close enough.

The infantry and my soon to somewhat replaced paints

This is all because I had a great half uncle who was in the Australian 6th Division 2/2 Field Park company - the combat engineers. This is a...play to win list, so does not follow correct historical order of battle. But it does match the theme. I think in real life the engineers wouldn't have been in the Universal carriers of the Divisional cavalry but it's close enough for my fluff, or moved past the initial barbed wire, anti tank ditch and minefields. I'll need to read the company's battle history I downloaded from the AWM eventually to see what they actually did.

There's also some Warlord Games Snipers, Australian Radio/spotter crew, some objective carts, British officers, a wounded carrier (come to think of it, that would make a good medic!), and  a pinup called Jesse from a Kickstarter.

I found they only had mold lines on the bases that took some filing off. Unfortunately nearly all of them have bayonets ready, and they BEND ALL THE TIME.  I expect they'll snap off before their first battle and look bad doing it with just the bayonet lug left.  I don't know how to fix that :( The paint on the undercoat's coming off of them already.

I should have put some sappers equipment on some of them, but I have JUST enough to work as my rifles AND my engineers. I think I will get some more advancing infantry later and make them the more obvious engineers, 1 squad of whom will have satchel chargers (aka anti-tank grenades).

I got my Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0. Or at least, SOME of them

After much forethought and planning I decided I wanted to replace all my (so far unused!) Army Painter Speedpaints for Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0, which don't have the re-activation issues of the mark I's.

I spent a lot of time trying to find somewhere in Melbourne who sells them, without too much luck :(. Army Painter themselves does NOT list anyone in Melbourne who has them. This is fucking useless - I WANT TO GIVE THEM MONEY

I had searched the internet for sometime to try and find the colours other people use for 1941 Australians and came up with nothing because Google is fucking useless now.

But I found 2 Youtube videos - one of English uniforms 1937 pattern that I read the 6th Division was wearing, and another one of a Tobruk reinactor .

I knew The House of War has them, so instead of waiting 2-3 WEEKS for delivery (that was the estimated time span!) I headed off in the rain to get some.

And found they only had HALF of the Speedpaint 2.0, and none of the mediam I would need if I want to use the Speedpaint Mk I's :( :( :(

I got what I could, but they didn't have the Army Painter spray cans.

I asked why and was told a strange story. Apparently, they blow up.

What I said? Blow up!? How?!?!

Apparently multiple customers were just standing there and suddenly the can would open and paint would explode everywhere. So they don't carry Army Painter spray cans anymore.

I carefully avoided the Citadel ones and looked at the Vallejo. And wouldn't you know it, they have English Uniform in a spray can! Exactly what I needed! This way I can spray paint the figures and just block in the rest and do Zenhital shading from above with a sand colour to do the helmet at the same time!

So that worked out for me.

I also got some beach sand as I'll need some kind of sand for the bases. They didn't have a darker sand but I can wash this afterwards to make it more orange red. I was disappointment they didn't have Sand from North Africa,, they seemed to have it for a dozen other planets. I actually have ACTUAL SAND from both Utah AND Omaha beaches! And I got some objective sized oil drums and THE BRIEFCASE I need to paint as red and blue. We must protect the briefcase of intelligence from the enemy spy you see.

I needed some glue too. I asked the person behind the counter which of the DOZEN Superglue's I need for metal, I think they picked one randomly.

I asked when they might get more Speedpaints:

I can't tell you.

You can tell me, I'm a customer.

No I mean I don't know.

You don't know if you're getting more Speedpaints?

No I mean I don't know when they might arrive.

How can you not know, didn't you order more?

Yes but it's up to the distributor when we get might them.

I would like to give these people money but they make it very hard to do so. I took the wrong day to  not try drinking.  Looks like I need to order online anyway. :(

I need to write down what I got and I want I still need.

And after all that, I got home and it's raining too much to do undercoating anyway.

All my usable paints in one place

After much digging I'm put all my (non-citadel base/layer) paints into my newly built Warlord Games Large Paint Rack. They just fit.

I have not sorted the colours yet, but I have done them by type.

Top level: Uncommon Citadel drybrushing, Army Painter mediums and varnish, spare Army Painter  wash, citadel gold base and texture.

2nd level: Commn Citadel drybrushing

3rd level: Army Painter paints black, dark and brown, Army Painter Metallics

4th level: Army Painter paints other colours

5th level: Army Paint Speedpaints V1, spare Citadel Nuln Oil

6th level: Army Painter washes

Bottom level: Citadel washes, Paint Brush cleaner

Left side: Army Painter brushes at the front, old worn brushes behind, tweezers

Right side: Large brushes, modeling tools

I do want to swap the Army Painter paints and Speedpaints V1 with all Army Painter Speedpaints V2 - I am not a good or patient painter and I just want to my troops on the ground as soon as I can. I got the Army Painter Speedpaints V1 but never got around to using them before the V2 came out which apparently do not have the problems the V1 do.

Most of the Army Painter paints came in the starter pack, the Warlord games paint set for Black Powder Civil War, and Warlord games fast deployment set.

I put away my old Citadel Base and Layer paints. I always hated and was not good at using layers, and using a wash (and dry-brushing important figures) is more than enough for me, so I kept the dry brushing ones. I suspect they have all dried out though. Also I don't have gold metallic base in Army Painter so kept those ones too. The Citadel pots are very messy to use and dry out way too easily compared to the drop bottles too.

I liked using the Games Workshop ink washes, but they are probably too thin compared to the Army Painter washes. They are more colorful though, so kept them in the rack.

What sucks: I seem to have thrown out all my spray paint undercoats, so can't paint anything!  :(

2nd part of my FOGN army washed with Army Painter Soft Tone

2nd group of my FOGN army washed

I have washed the second group of my FOGN Anglo-Portuguese army. This time I used Army Painter Quickshade Wash Soft Tone. I agonized on which colour to do, but decided I wanted to keep as much colour as possible.

The two on the right are washed, the two on the left are not.

A close up. Washed is right, unwashed left.

Only the 9 pounder in the bottom right is not washed here.

Left is washed, right is not washed.
The white horse needed the most work, to keep it going too brown. I still need to put some bushes down, paint the edges (think I'll go with a dark brown), varnish and then put the flags on.

Or is put flags on and THEN varnish?

I've finally been able to put an order in for more bases plates to olympiangames.com.au who said they were sending me emails I didn't get (what!?!). Should arrive next week and be finally able to get my army complete on the table for some battles! I will still need to paint my Generals, ADC's and LOC :(

Currently  I have the following units on bases:

1 Heavy Dragoon

1 Hussar

3 British 6 pounder guns

1 British 9 pounder gun

1 British 6 pounder horse artillery gun

1 Portuguese  6 pounder Portuguese gun

1 Light infantry Musket unit and 2 skirmish attachments

1 Light infantry Rifle unit and 2 skirmish attachments

1 Loyal Lustrian light infantry rifle unit and 2 skirmish attachments

1 British infantry unit

1 Highlander infantry unit

2 Portuguese infantry units

1 Conscript/Spanish Guerrilla unit

More bases flocked and painted

Two more divisions have their base flocked and painted. I did a grey rock base, then yellow dry brush and then a dark green dry-brush/paint. I tried to cover up the areas that didn't have rocks on them with the dark green.

I did a darker green this time, which I think works better than the previous batch here.

I still to use a wash on everything, do some touch ups like red on the artillery torches, glue on grass tuffs, put black on the end of guns and paint the bases edge (I think I'll do a dark brown) and the never yet done flags.

I really should have spray painted the bases first before putting anything on them - probably a very dark green.

One Divison...almost completed. LoA Tournment tomorrow. Battle awaits.

After a year...I have 1 Division for the League of Ancients Tournament tomorrow. I'm going to borrow the rest of an army tomorrow.

I still have the other units on order...they left England yesterday, so won't make it for tomorrow's tournament (my first ever Napoleonic one and first wargame one for over a decade).

I still need to get some flags and varnish them, but I can use them on the table now. Q- anyone got a link to 18mm sized English and Portuguese flags for the Peninsula war? Apart from one unit of AB Portuguese, the rest are Stonewall Figures per-painted battalions (I puta too dark Nuln Oil over them). For those like me with bad eye sight and worse painting, they are a god send.

I don't expect to win any battles tomorrow, but I can always follow Napoleons tradition and style and claim victory in the battle reports afterwards.

Bases dry brushed

I have dry brushed the bases with Citadel Dry Hexos Palesun. The base is Army Painter Basing: Brown Battleground (though it looks more grey to me)

Next up- light, dark green and yellow grass tuffs.

Washes and their use and abuse

I suddenly figured out what I did wrong- instead of using Nuln Oil, I should have used a wash OF THE PRIMARY COLOUR. So instead of an army that's all dark and black, red for red, green for green, blue for blue etc.

I will have to try that for the next units.

Next up- trying to dry-brush off-white or sand yellow onto the rocks, and then place grass bushes on it.

6.5 units based and gravalled

I have based and put gravel under 6 units, plus 4 skirmisher attachments.

Green won't work because of the Riflemen and Loyal Lustrian Legion in dark green. I only had green and grey so choose grey. I think I need to lighten the grey though...maybe some yellow or light brown? Then put some yellow tuffs of grass.

The original figures are from https://www.stonewallfigures.co.uk

One third of my FOGN Penisula War army now on bases

This has taken a year since I started playing Field of Glory Napolonic. This is 1/3 of the army, and I still need to give them a wash and flock the bases.

The flocking will occur after I get the other two thirds from https://www.stonewallfigures.co.uk

My brother in law got me the Highlanders for Christmas.

21st Portuguese Infantry Regiment painting part 5 - Amerageddon or Spanish(?) dust

The Dust of Armageddon, acting as the plains of Spain.

I next need to drybrush the base...not sure how I'm supposed to do that. As is, I got some of the mud on the uniforms. :(

Not pictured- the 1.5 INCH ORB SPIDER who has decided to take up residence between the Hills Hoist and my Mancave I paint in. It's setting up a 2 METER web across the garden EVERY NIGHT. I've almost walked into the Spider 3 times now.  Spinning the Hills Hoist dosn't break the web.

Next time I need to walk the long way around. I can't see the Spider or her web until I come back and observe the PREDATOR WAITING FOR ME.

I do not have a photo of it because I don't want to get within 5 meters of the thing if I can see it.

21st Portuguese Infantry Regiment painting part 4 - on the base

I got some Loctie Super Glue that comes out of a pen, and it makes it SO EASY!

Loctite Super Glue Perfect Pen provides the most precise and clean repairs. The new device in the shape of a pen allows a drop by drop application with no mess. It is as easy as using a pen! It's ideal for all items for which you require precision and control in the application to ensure a perfect result and a mess-free repair.
It worked amazingly well on the small stands that 18mm use. So much easier than trying to do 40k figures with Tarzan grip 20 years ago. Still got some coated a finger though.

Battalion, Glue!

21st Portuguese Infantry Regiment painting part 3

Finished base coats and covered liberally with Nuln Oil.

I'm not very happy with them, though I got better as I went. I'm hoping the ARMY PAINTER brushes and paint work better.

My mid-life crises continues...ARMY PAINTER!

So after watching Army Painter Brushes Tufts and Paints Gift Box Reveal from Sword 'n' Steele I went and spent $200 at Mind Games in Melbourne and 20 bucks at Metro Hobbies (where I got the small grass tufts, Mind Games only had 28mm sized ones).

The Wargames magazine has several articles about the Spanish army and people in the Peninsula war though not much I didn't know already.

The paint is Army Painter, along with the Brushes and ball bearings (which I understand you really need for Army Painter paints) and the wild tufts are made in Spain and look ok for Spain too.

I'm disappointed that Warlord has a Russian and French paint set, but not a British one. The set I've just noticed dosn't have a Green either, so I'll need some more paints for British Riflemen.
