FOGN 3rd edition draft army list

Now Legal!

So the draft army list rules came out for FOGN 3rd edition.  1809-1811 Anlgo Portuguese lists says skirmishers are limited to 2 per division and you can only attach 2 cavalry squadrons to a single mixed division. So no more mounted guerillas :(

I CAN get more larger units now, and it seems everyone is going for either large or superior units to be able to ignore the first hit from artillery or counter charge fire.

So the 1st Division is still the vanguard. They have the greatest firepower and are the most resilient.  If I have towns or strong-points the large units can garrison them extremely well and the Highlander units can sit near them for a counter attack.

The Light Division is the flanking unit - either for an outflank mission or to the side of the main body.

The Portuguese Division holds the redoubts or closer to the line of communications - it can't attack a location by itself or fight a cavalry division by itself either.

The Cavalry Division holds one flank by itself. If it has to fight a larger cavalry division, I'm hoping the Royal Horse Artillery veteran's will give it a chance before fighting heavier cavalry.

I MUST secure one flank with either terrain or a flanking attack - Either use a river to guard a flank or an extra road to secure the LOC to a corner. Note: new rules are that rivers or streams less than 6 feet across cannot be in the centre section.

A cheaper gaming table?

 From trsports.com.au

6 foot x 3 foot of gaming area'

It's 1/10 the price of a gaming table of my dreams, and not the regulation 6ftx4ft proper wargaming table, but I can fit it, and maybe afford it.

Not enough room to actually PLAY pool, but that's not them point.

WARGAMER'S NEWSLETTER - Old wargame newsletters from 1964 to 1980

More History found -  here.

Copies of the old Wargamer's Newsletter by Donald Featherstone. One G.Gygax wrote an article in one of the 1974 ones, though no one seems to have mentioned role playing. At least in the '74 ones they spent a lot of time talking about wargames in the British Empire post 1850.

This comment from March '75 shows that war, war never changes:

Some wargame history

You and me are just passing through history.

This...this IS history. Came out in 1974-76. Picked up at the swap meet at House of War, which I was wish was 10 minutes closer to home so I could maybe play wargames there.  AFAIK they are the largest wargame store in Melbourne, with the largest Dragon too.

Question I've always had - if Napoleonic was book 4, and WW2 book 15...what were the other Airfix ones???

I hope I can learn some better tactics from these!

And they were only $5 each!

It's very large and impressive
True Scale for 28mm I think!

Lead Adventure Forum asks: What are the Top Things that Attract You to a Rules System?

What are the Top Things that Attract You to a Rules System?

(In a rough order of importance):

Is there someone else I can play it with?

Is it in an era I'm interested in?

Can I get the figures for it easily? Can I get them already painted?

Are the rules well laid out in a book (I do not want to print out an entire rule book from PDF).

Can the non-active player do something during the other players turn? IE- if it is not my turn, is there any point to be being at the table?  I'd much prefer having some activity to do during it.

No area templates in game- I should not need to keep units 2" apart to avoid some random explosion. No angles on "you cannot fire here".

Are there YouTube video's showing me how to play. Yes, ALL THE RULES.

Are the army lists varied and able to give many options in building the army so I can play the army and style I like?

Can I build an army using excel or online web page and print it on one page.

A minimum of counters on the table, but some are ok - orders and 1(!) unit condition is fine.

Not too many dice to roll per action - more than 6 or so is too much to count.

Avoid the use of cards ideally - I shouldn't have to play a game of poker or Magic the Gathering in my wargame.

Avoid off board templates for orders- I should not need a separate table for that.

Are these in built solo rules?

Are there campaign rules, and do they allow the loser of the battle to recover in the next one (because every campaign rules I see seems to end in a deathball/death spiral).

More thoughts on an improved army list

I would really like to get a veteran army, and the Waterloo British Infantry Corps 1815 can do it.

The problem is that's it's REALLY expensive and can only afford to get one Division of veteran's. Another Division has to be made up of really crappy Belgium troops, and you can't afford a British Cavalry Corps, just a single Brunswick Uhan brigade, though they are lancers.

So after writing up the last battle report, it seemed to me that I still need a higher break point for the army, I need a division in reserve to plug gaps, and the other two infantry divisions need more reserves.

Here we go again

The 1st Division will always be getting deployed, so it needs the heaviest artillery I can get with the best skirmishers as it will be fighting the longest and heaviest part of the battle - hence the charismatic commander too. I've added a 4th unit as an extra divisional reserve to either lengthen the line or be a rear support for the assaulting front units.

The Light Division also needs another reserve unit, so I've put the KGL here to give them extra firepower and better assault power  too. It means the division can put the KGL in a town and have the 95th as a quick counter attack force. The KGL will make the division slower in rough terrain (where it can't put out much firepower) but it still has an attached Rifle Company to help. The Loyal Listrianain brigade is OK...but I've been asking too much of it. I can attach one cavalry squadron and the Guerrillas are the weakest to defend against enemy light infantry brigades. And I have some Spanish Guerrilla cavalry figures I want to get on the field.

The Portuguese Division will often be the last on the field, defending the LOC, or holding entrenchments. The conscript brigade would be staying at the back of the army at the LOC (or sitting in a dug out where they get a bonus). It won't be making any flanking attacks and will be the furthest away if the army is doing an echelon attack (but still has skirmisher units to reach out at a longer distance). It's not much good at assaulting enemy positions, but can defend itself against enemy infantry for a bit. It does not have the firepower to fight enemy cavalry divisions!

The Cavalry Division is only a flanking force- it does not have any heavy cavalry now. The Hussars with their Royal Horse Artillery and Brilliant Commander (one Captain Sharpe I believe) should be able to defeat any other light cavalry unit (...maybe not Lancers) but they have 2 other units supporting them. They might even be able to get a draw vs 2 heavy cavalry brigades, or at least hold them off. If the enemy has a Cavalry Corps, they would need to stay back and hope the infantry's artillery can disrupt the enemy heavy brigades first.  It does not have a skilled commander now, so the division will need to make more brigade moves and may be slower to arrive on the battlefield, but it does have better speed than the other divisions to catch up.
