Video of a US reinforced platoon attacking a town in a training exercise

Video of a US reinforced platoon attacking a town in a training exercise

I finally found it: a video showing a reinforced platoon conducting an attack. 3 squads (of 5 engineers as they have satchel chargers), 3 5 man rifle squads (cover party for each assault squad with a light machine gun, a mediam mortar squad (with spotter), MMG squad, Bazooka squad, 2 tanks in reserve. Command by a platoon commander (by himself).

Turn by Turn Description:

Initial bombardment of the objective and then smoke (!) rounds before the infantry go in, Note: Smoke rounds seem to suck in Bolt Action.

1st squad in wedge formation, rest in column. Medium mortar deploys behind them.

Lead squad in the centre, one other squad on each flank.

Recoilless rifle between 2 of the squads, bazooka next to the right and the LMGs between them.

Smoke stops firing before the infantry goes in as all infantry units opens fire on the defenders in the buildings.

Medium mortar using a spotter does counter battery fire on enemy mortar.

Left squad runs into the first objective building (doing an advance and then a run), rest of the infantry shoot at other targets, they assault and take it.

LMG squad gets pinned so mortar fires smoke(!) to cover them.

Left squad shoots at one building and the LMG team shoot at 2nd from upstairs,

They switch to a new building as the other squad assaults the 2nd building,  again doing an advance and then a run.

Platoon CO gets into the first building and goes to its roof.

One squad uses a Engineer demo charge(!) to enter another building.

Bazooka shoots at t the next building and left squads assaults it (with a grappling hook to the 2nd level!).

Bazooka fires smoke(!) and the LMG team come up to support the squad with the Bazooka.

Last squad and RR comes into town.

Squad attacks the next building from the roof and work their way down. LMG team covered the door.

Tanks come in from reserve and shoots the next building, Squad goes in and assaults the basement with an engineers charge.,

One injury gets a medic.

Last building surrenders when their army reaches it's break point.

Company commander gets 2nd platoon through to the next target.

Note: The enemy seems to consist of about six, 5 man squads of infantry with LMG's and 1 mediam mortar.

Conclusion:

To win in a buildup area, use Surprise, firepower, good troops. Do an artillery barrage first, then a smoke barrage. Use engineers to assault buildings, rifle squads to cover them with LMG's. MMG and Bazooka to cover flanks and shoot into buildings. Mortar in the rear for support and tanks in reserve to come up later. Medic at the back for support.

The Army list:

It works out with early war Sherman's to be 1100. Have to get some extra platoon commanders but making the heavy weapons commander inexperienced makes it work! I do have to drop the Recoilless Rifle though and not replace it with another bazooka.

Units and terrian I need for Bolt Action 1941

I've gathered nearly all my wargaming stuff (ignoring old sad 40K stuff from 20 years ago) in one place and looked through my Bolt Action units I have.

I also have all my board games in one place (not very accessible at the end of the table). Once I get another bookcase I can move all my table top wargames there too.

Current army list:

PickList
British 2-pdr Portee1
British Anti-tank rifle team1
British Bren Carrier2
British Bren Carrier (Boys AT)1
British Forward Observer (Artillery)1
British Infantry (equipped as modeled)3

I need:

British 2-pdr Portee
British Medic and stretcher bearer

I only have 20 Bardia Australian infantry with rifles but I have another 52 metal and plastic 8th army and BEF figures I can use to use as them and one NCO with a rifle.

And EVERYTHING needs to be put together and painted! I could also use a 3-ton truck, a 30 CWT truck, another two Vickers machine guns, another two 3 inch mortar's, another Vickers light tank, another Crusader 1/II, three universal carrier's with a 2 inch and 3 inch mortar and a Vickers machine gun and an 37mm light AA gun on a portee truck,

Italian 10th Army OPFOR:

I have a box of 36 Italian infantry I can convert to different types
1 M11 tank

I need:

Another box of 30+ Italian infantry
2-3 more tanks
2-3 light armored transports
2-3 artillery pieces
2-3 anti tank guns
2-6 mediam machine guns
2-6 mediam mortars

I do have some desert colored pieces of terrain I can use to represent sandy terrian and add some 3d effect to the battlefield, but that's about it.

A 6x4 battle mat for the desert
A collection of white washed and desert colored MDF buildings for North Africa (and can be used  in Spain too!)

Goals for 2025

I didn't paint anything I think and didn't get much games in 2024, but I hope to get some moving in 2025. I did learn how to play Glory is Fleeting but that was the only wargame I played in 2025.

I have moved my gaming table to a location I can actually use it, and I've got all my terrain in place and painting supplies ready to begin.

I still need to get a new cheap bookcase to move all my RPG, wargame and history books to be close to the table in one room.

My wargaming goals for 2025:

1: Build, paint and deploy to the battlefield, a 1000-1250 sized Bolt Action army of the Australian 6th Division circa 1941 North Africa. Aiming for 1100 as that is the Cancon tournament size, though I won't make it, or have it ready for Cancon 2025. I believe I have all the figures and vehicles for it already.

2: Buy, Build and Paint an Italian 10th army 1941 as an Opfor. I have most of the troops and 1 tank.

3: Get some solo games running of both these armies and blog them.

4: Get a game or two at a local gaming club for Bolt Action

5: Far future - deploy the army to a tournament.

6: Get the Warlord Epic Waterloo figures out and play some solo games with them to learn some Black Powder.

7: Paint both armies. This is very much a far future thing.

8: Get my Glory is Fleeting Anglo-Portuguese army to some tournaments and get some games with Dave.

9: Actually GET my Battletech: Mercenaries box from CGL. I will believe it when I see it.

10: Start making videos of solo game play and get them uploaded to YouTube. There is a lot I need to learn, and I probably need a new phone and a stand for it. I hate shaking cam! Learning editing and effects is going to be very challenging too.

11: Paint some backgrounds for pictures and videos using Bob Ross techniques. This is going to take a lot of practice.

12:  Get WW2 training pamphlets from Caviler books on how to do a platoon and company sized attack and defence. All the ones I can find on the internet involve a platoon attacking a single(!) enemy emplacement.  I want to know  and learn how a company attacks another company of equal size.

Team Fortress 2 figures for Bolt Action

So I spent a lot of time over the holiday watching ALL of the Team Fortress 2 Meet the Team videos and I found STL files for tabletop miniatures for them at https://www.thingiverse.com/flyingpenguin/designs and downloaded the file.

And Now I Want To Build A Bolt Action Army based on it. Degree of Difficulty : I can't print 3D models. Also: I would need to quote one of the above videos every time I move or roll one of the  figures, possibly causing my opponent to throttle me.

Engineer: Engineer Infantry.

Sentry bots: MMG, HMG and Medium Mortar.  The Dispenser is part of the crew and loader for LMG.

Sniper: The Sniper.

Heavy Weapons Guy: Squad LMG.

Scout: 2nd and 3rd runners for platoon and company commanders.

Solider:   Basic rifleman. Probably have to take as late war Germans so 4 of the 5 men in the squad can carry a panzerfaust.

Demoman: Grenade Launcher or Light Mortar.

Spy: Artillery Spotter, Platoon and Company Commanders.

Medic: Medic.

Pryo: Flamethrower.

Trucks: Unarmed lorries.

Objectives: The Red and Blue Briefcase, The Sandvitch, Archimedes the Pigeon, teleporter out and in.

In other news, my wonderful partner got me the Bolt Action V3 rules. YAY!

Actual Platoon ToE and WW2 training videos

It annoys me that I can't make a platoon with sections because the special weapons like ATRs and Mortar's go off on their own team, though I can see why they do it for the game. But I should be able to split the LMG off with 2 other men, and have a smaller section of 4! And a full section is 8 not 10.

British WW2 Training films from AWM

I presume the 1941 Australian Infantry Platoon was setup the same way. Google is fucking useless at finding it though.  I suspect they lack the bicycle in the desert.

Universal Carrier handling and what they carry and act.

Bren Gun use. Interesting it has a tripod for ground use that NO ONE EVER MENTIONS. Only German GPMG's ever get that talked about! Granted it's not belt fed but you probably get as much rounds with quick magazine charges.

British and German tank identification, but includes information about their practice.

Using the 3-inch mortar. Interesting it has  6 man crew, not 3 as in the game, though 2 of them act as a spotters.  The smoke screen would cross the entire table, which I guess is is why it's nerfed in V3.

100 years of British Army organization

Yet another rule I didn't know about means the Attack on Bardia needs trained light mortars

So I found out that inexperienced mortars can't be spotted for by other units. Aka, the Forward Observer can't yell out to them. So to make the best use of them, they MUST be experienced.

I have to drop ALL the platoon and FO runners and go back to a 30 CWT 10 man truck. I could get the 3-ton truck but that leave me 2 points short of 1100 so I got one of the rifle squad sergeants a captured Italian SMG. Not having the max points is more annoying that the better tactical ability of a truck that can fit a squad and commander.

I could afford everyone I want...if I drop the sniper. It's half the cost of a inexperienced Matilda II!  I really need to play some games to see if it's worth it or not. I figure with 18 order dice I'll often get to place him first, and put him down to force the other side from avoiding him with their spotters. He should be the scout for the direction my engineers are going to advance through, or in a location to cover where my rifle platoon in carriers came in to take out anti-tank weapons. He's the platoon scouts and needs to be used that way, not as the guy trying to get a boom head-shot on enemy officers.

Which reminds me, I need to find a 28mm figure of the Sniper from Team Fortress 2 and paint him up to be the Red Team. Then use his quotes every time I use him.

Sniper: Boom. Headshot

Sniper: Sniping's a good job mate. Challenging work. Outa doors. I guarantee you'll not go hungry. Because at the end of the day, as long there are two people left on the planet, someone is going to want someone dead.

Sniper: Ooh

Sniper: Dad... I'm a... I'm not a crazed gunman dad, I'm an assassin. Well the difference being ones a job and the other's mental sickness!

Sniper: I'll be honest with you, my parents, do not care for it.

Sniper: I think his mate saw me.

Sniper: Yes, yes he did.

Sniper: Feelings? Look mate, you know who has a lot of feelings? Blokes who bludgeon their wives to death with a gold trophy.

Sniper: Professionals have standards. Be polite. Be efficient. Have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

Sniper: Dad.. dad... Put... Put mum on the phone.

Bolt Action battle reports for Bardia on YouTube

V2 of course

 From Bring & Battle Wargaming:

1000 point Large inexperienced Italian army of 60+, 3 trucks and light armour vs a very small mobile British army of 2 Matty's, armored car and 4 carriers with infantry. Very long, have not watched all of it. Italians win.

Next one is from Tri-Star Wargaming. Have not watched much of it yet. The Italians win again!

Movies of the actual Battle of Bardia for reference and painting

With all this theroycrafting I should watch the existing film of the ACTUAL battle and its aftermath.

A long setup to the battle with the troops getting to the middle east. A ships cat. Weirdly it shows Crusader I's I think, but refers to the Matilda's. Maybe from later on in the war? The camo on them is post early 41. Also has some German troops from much later!  Looks Vickers light tanks with the .50 cals on training beforehand. All painted sand colour (or covered in it). Dark colored Bren Gun Carries but caked in sand to the half way point. Has a light colored field ambulance. Captured Italian tanks attacking Tobruk. Mention of the 2/1 Field Park Engineers and 2/3rd  Battalion wearing light colored clothes in shorts and short sleeves and cloth covered helmets I suspect are training. Everyone else is in the dark Khaki.  A Cruiser tank of some sort WITH Bren gun pintle mount!

Content warning: Dead bodies past the 16:30 mark.

Raw footage that shows up a lot in other videos. Shows troops in dark Khaki tops but most are wearing light shorts, post battle when going on patrol(?). Guards are wearing greatcoats, it must have been very cold. Terrain is filmed from the and consists of buildings, compounds, sand and dirt dunes and lots of abandoned trucks. Whitewashed Libyan buildings for the centre of town. Trucks have camonets over them. The desert has lots of bunkers, sangers, emplacements, walls and ground floor ruins. Lots of flat space with sparse rocks.

Content warning: Dead bodies past the 6:15 mark.

Mostly terrain, destroying buildings and trucks moving about. The staff cars often have a camonet on them.

Looks like the Matilda II's have Cuanter Camouflage, which is going to be very hard for me to paint. I suspect I'll just cover it in sand colour, which they ended up being anyway. I should put a pennant on the command tank.

Content warning: Dead Italian artillerymen who fell a their guns around 2:40 mark

The 18 pounder crews are wearing slouch hats! More Cuanter Camouflage for Bren Gun Carriers, but at least one looks to be painted a dark green. Only one of the many carriers seen has a pintle mounter Bren gun, so it did happen, but wasn't common.

25 pounders and this time the crews wear helmets and great coat, which makes me think the earlier ones were after the battle. Looks like a Rolls Royce Armored car with Boys AT rifle and Bren gun in an open top. So I COULD get one. One of the trucks has a pintle mounted(?) Bren gun behind the cabin. Troops are wearing dark Khaki clothes and great coats., Helmets are light (presumably sand colored).  Telegraph poles, small single trees in the town. Also a Vickers light tank with .50cal crossing a tank trap after the battle.

Mostly post battle. Lots of rocks and sangers in the terrain, 4.5" howitzers, though they would not have been on the table! The guns have camo on them, and nets. 18 or 25 pounders and the crews are all wearing dark Khaki.

Content warning: Dead Italian infantry who fell at their posts at 1:30 mark. Sad part is seeing the family photos from one of them.

Yet another change - CanCon rules are no more than 18 order dice

...And there's another rule I need to take into account. Cancon runs their Bolt Action tournaments and narratives (which sound awesome to play) with a max of 18 order dice. Meaning my 19 order dice army list will not work!

The easiest way to do it is to remove the 2nd light mortar.  Or the stretcher bearers. And I like the stretcher bearers.

So back to no platoon runners. The truck DOES get upgraded to a 3-ton truck which means I can move a full squad AND the platoon commander forward from the engineer platoon. But it's now inexperienced but the commander would be in it to get it on the table if needed.

The AT Rifle team and Light Mortar are still inexperienced but the Matty II is now regular. I'd rather have the tank on the field than the AT rifle and mortar that can't lay smoke :(

The AT team can also stay in the carrier and man the pintle mounted Bren LMG.

And just to complicate things, every Bolt Action Tournament in Australia has different points values between 1000, 1100 or 1250! So who knows what size the army would actually need to be! If I have to drop to 1000 I'd probably drop the sniper, stretcher bearers and the light mortar squad.  If it's 1250 I might get a second Matilda II and use them as a pair at all times.
