4 Divisions, 3 Cavalry and Maximum Artillery |
More theorycrafting of a new army list, following from the lessons learnt at the LoA Tournament.
The 1st Division was to unwieldy with two large infantry units, and the division reserve of a small Superior Highlander unit too small. Also it needs a cavalry attachment to have better staying power and the other two units near heavy firepower to see off cavalry by themselves, or form square and do enough damage to force enemy horse to move away. And they now have Rifle companies attached to maybe slow down enemy general's too.
Likewise the 95th Rifles need more firepower, their performance wasn't great. I think the Loyal Lustrian brigade did more damage.
The Reserves are now their own division. I was VERY lucky with the Portuguese units that took heavy fire in their redoubts and kept their morale up (often rolling one 5 or a 6 and then re-roll to a 5+), but attaching a charismatic commander is a necessity. The reserve Highlander unit will often be the last unit I can use to plug holes in, so needs a lot of resilience and often will end up on the front line so attaching a skirmish company will help that too. It really needs to be a large unit, but to do that I have to decrease the cavalry and remove some other attachments. I'll have to see how it goes but keep it in mind I might need to do that.
If the Corps is attacking, the Portuguese units are going to stay back as a reserve anyway, and the conscripts probably get parked next to the armies line of communication.
This also means I can use both the Light and Cavalry division for an envelopment on BOTH sides of the board and still have enough boots on the ground to hold the line until they can arrive.
I'm losing the Heavy Dragoons, but using the Cavalry in three units is something I need to do - one unit by itself, even if the best cavalry in the game, is always going to be counter charged after being spent. My great victory was having a second unit next to then first to take advantage. The KGL if needed can go off on their own better than the Portuguese Dragoons can, and if paired with the Hussar's can cope better if the Hussar's lose the initial fight. They can also stay further back than the Heavy Dragoons would for counter charges, are faster to reach the point they need to get to from reserve, and force Cossack's to stray further back.
The cavalry division MUST not try and fight two shock heavy units or lancers, but should try and fall back and lure the enemy heavy cavalry away from the infantry battle. If the enemy has two heavy cavalry units, all three brigades must move together.
